Drag Racing in the Aloha State
Written by: Guy Caputo
When it comes to motorcycle drag racing, one really doesn’t relate the beautiful weather and tranquil surroundings of the Hawaiian Islands to it. Surfing yes, pineapples yes, volcanoes, poi and hula girls yes, yes, yes. But drag racing? Well one doesn’t have to ask very many people here on Oahu who the go to man is regarding drag racing, they’ll all tell you the same thing.
Ted Davis at RevTek Speed Tuning Center in Waipahu, Hawaii.
Ted has been tuning performance bikes for over 15years here on the islands and no one knows it better than him.

The RevTek Speed Tuning Center always has bikes galore parked anywhere there is an open spot which is located in a very tight parking lot. Parking spaces are a luxury here on the island and Ted tells everyone, first come first served do don’t be shy and grab a spot.

Behind all those bikes stacked up against the door, Ted employs the latest tuning center technology with a DynoJet 350 enclosed in an air tight and sound tight Dyno chamber. Look at the size of those air ducts coming out of there. Now that’s an air sucker if ever I’ve seen one.

Ted enjoys hopping aboard the RevTek “Cosmos” Turbo Busa and going for a spin around the island. I call it the Gilligan’s 3 hour tour. His custom painter spent many an hour painting this majestic mural of space and its heavenly bodies.

Cosmic Airbrush did all the handy work in the airbrush department and it turned out fabulous. From the front fender to the rear cowling, it’s a work of art.
The rear cowling gives you the illusion of being a part of the space and celestial bodies that are affixed to it and that you are floating around in the heavenly abyss being one with the galaxy. Yucch, did I just write that?

The photo below shows Candace Izumi aboard her Suzuki GSXR750 screaming down the quarter mile at the Big Island Auto Club of Hilo, Hawaii. The BIAC host many event through out the year and can be found on the www.IslandRacer.com website. This website is the main drag racing page for the islanders. Please book mark this page and visit when you can, I’m sure they would love to hear from you. When you race in Hawaii, you can’t just pack your trailer and drive to the track, since there is no track on Oahu, you must pack it up and fly it to the track. Yes, I said fly it to the track unless the Island Super Ferry is running in your direction. You pack up your stuff and put it on an Hawaiian Airlines plane and fly your stuff to the track. Then, when your done drag racing, you pack it up and fly it home again each and every time you want to Drag Race at another track.

Believe it or not, Ted Davis is about 5’0” tall and weighs in at about 120lbs, gawd what I wouldn’t give to weigh that much again.
This next picture is of John Kawasaki (yes, that’s his name) on his Blue Suzuki GSXR1000 who chopped down the tree on that run. Notice that all of the bikes are stretched and lowered and ready for racing here on the islands. Ted does most of the custom work in his shop and caters to the racing community with just about anything you could need or use for your bike.

Robert Santos (Bobby) is the Sales Manager for RevTek Speed Tuning Center and is the man you want be friends with there. If Bobby can’t get it for you, it can’t be gotten. Bobby has worked for Ted Davis since he was a teenager sweeping the floors, just so that he could be near the bikes. Now that’s dedication I tell ya.
