Malloy cracks second track record in as many races
Bob Malloy aboard his H-D of Seaford Buell Top Fuel machine took his second track record in as many races when he ran a 6.60 @ 208.00 MPH at Cecil County Raceway. In round one of Top Fuel qualifying at the Screamin’ Eagle Race Series’ second race of the year Malloy qualified number one and eclipsed the track record for a H-D Top Fuel motorcycle. “I was extremely happy to set the track record here as Cecil County is my home track”, said an excited Malloy. “I had a lot of family and friends on hand as well as my sponsor so we were looking to do well here.”
In round two of qualifying Malloy made a few changes in an attempt to see just how much the track could hold. “Jack (brother/crew chief) and I decided to step-up the tune-up to see if the track could handle the power”, said Malloy. “We found out in a hurry that the track couldn’t hold much more than we had in round one. Not one second into the run I had some severe tire shake and had to shut it down.” Malloy then went back to the 6.60 tune-up and was ready and confident about eliminations.
“I was really hoping to put on a good show. I thought we were ready and today would be our day,” related Malloy. But as they say sometimes the best laid plans just don’t pan out. “When I did the burnout everything felt good and strong and I was looking forward to a good run,” said Malloy. “Unfortunately at 1.12 seconds into the run we destroyed a belt and our day was over. Because we run a high gear only bike we leave a little more violently than the two-speeds. I’m going to have to work on the fuel system some and smooth out the fuel curve. I know I can’t afford to change belts after every one to two runs.”
After tearing the bike apart and consulting with his fuel specialist Malloy thinks they know exactly what to do. “I’ve already begun making the changes it’s going to take to make the belts live a few rounds and I think you’ll see the difference when we get to Bristol. I am proud of what we have accomplished in these first two Screamin’ Eagle races but I know we still have a long way to go. But I feel that we will be very competitive for the rest of the season,” said Malloy.
Bob Malloy Racing will next appear at the AHDRA S&S Thunder in the Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway, Bristol, TN on August 14 – 15.
