Scali Poised for Round 10 by: Jack Korpela Defending NHRA POWERade champion Geno Scali vies for his first win of the season at this weekend’s 10th round of the Pro Stock Bike series, the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals from Brainerd, MN, at a track in which he has enjoyed much success.
In 2002 Scali collected his first career victory in Brainerd and took a Kawasaki to the winner’s circle for the first time since Dave Schultz accomplished the feat in 1992.
“Brainerd is very special to me,” Scali said. “I have a lot of great memories here and hopefully we can make a few more this weekend.”
After falling four spots in the POWERade points standings Scali is determined to start the gradual climb to the top this weekend. Scali is only 108 points behind second place Shawn Gann and 279 points behind leader Andrew Hines.
“We had the opportunity to go out and do some testing,” Scali said. “We’re still a championship team we just needed more laps. I think we are on the track to getting our consistency back.”
Last season Scali lead the points series 11 out 15 races. Although that hasn’t been the case this season, a veteran like Scali who has been racing pro since 1995 knows he is still in contention for the championship.
“We’re not discouraged,” Scali said. “I feel we are very close to getting last season’s consistency back. We still have five races left to go.”
Scali takes to the track for his first qualifying pass Friday at 2:30. Watch for Scali on this weekend’s extensive ESPN 2 TV Coverage. The team expresses gratitude towards all of its dedicated supporters; Trim-Tex Drywall Products, Craftsman Tools, Hot Cams camshafts, and PMFR chassis & wheels. The Team also thanks associate sponsors; Red Line Oil, Mini Rods, Diamond Power Sports, Vanson Leathers, Des Plaines Suzuki, Pingel, MSD Ignitions, and Bell Helmets.
