Damian Cownden Racing Takes Third Consecutive CMDRA Championship

The 2012 Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing Association season came to a close on September 8 & 9 at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta. Victoria B.C.’s Damian Cownden, the defending series champion, came into the final race with a 62 point lead over Edmonton’s Kevin Boyer, the 2009 series champion.

The Damian Cownden Racing team struggled with mechanical issues throughout qualifying, missing round 1 completely. Round 2 saw the team make it to the starting line with only seconds to spare, and take the number 1 qualifying spot with a pass of 6.746 at 217.07MPH (349.34KMH). The time held up after the team was forced to sit out round 3 of qualifying with a fuel leak. Overnight the team rebuilt the transmission on the bike so they could make it to the start line for round 1 of eliminations.

Cownden was able to defeat Boyer with a pass of 6.54 at a speed of 219.72MPH (353.63KMH) to move on the final round and secure the championship. The team had a bye run in the final round as their opponent was not able to make the start.

This is the team’s third CMDRA Top Fuel Championship, including 2010, and 2011.

The next event for the team is the AHDRA (All Harley Drag Racing Association) Jim McClure Nitro Nationals in Rockingham North Carolina, October 13 & 14.
