The last weekend in May sees the opening round of the 2016 FIM-E Drag Bike Championship, with the Santa Pod entry list showing healthy numbers across the four Championship and Cup classes. A significant number of the 50 pro entries will be competing in the full series so without further ado we pass on the news from the two-wheeled fraternity who will be chasing down the 2016 titles.

In recent seasons, Fredrik Fredlund has been the man to catch in PSB and is looking forward to defending his title for the fifth year in a row (and sixth in total): “Here comes a few fact on what has been going on in the PAF.com drag racing team in the winter. After the last year’s finals we needed to get us a new engine with the latest tricks and bits from Vance & Hines Motorsport because we destroyed the engine in the final run, and we have some more updates to the bike and the goal for this year is to try to defend our championship gold from last year, and also try to go both quicker and faster 🙂 We know our competitors have stepped up and want to beat us so we need stay sharp and smart to try to stay on top! But this would not have been possible with out our sponsors PAF.com, Ålands Färg & Tapet, Schakten AB, Rökeri Kiosken, Bärgarn AB and Vance & Hines, all of who we thank you for your support!!”

Runner up to Fredlund over the past two seasons Gert-jan Laseur gave us the lowdown on his preparations a few days ago: “Actually the engine is still out and on the work bench. We got some faster heads from Star Racing and little more cam. We changed exhaust again to improve flow and hope to go 7.0 this year. No new sponsors, no testing, just full throttle at Santa Pod. We still have Eurol oil as the main sponsor, Zodiac International and Jongerius Amersfoort and of course Laseur Motors!”

One we expect to be contending for class honours this year after a strong finish in the 2015 championship is Alex Hope: “We are planning to contest the full FIM-E championship with 2 Vance & Hines 1755 2v engines and are aiming to improve on last year’s 4th in the championship and run into the 7.1 and 7.0 second brackets. I also will be competing the EDRS Pro Nordic championship on my Super Street Bike in Sweden and Finland.”

Offseason preparations for Swecomposite’s Kenneth Holmberg haven’t exactly gone to plan but: “We will improve our results from earlier years and will compete all FIM-E and EDRS Pro with a priority on the FIM-E. We’ve made some updates on chassis and a lot of engine improvements. Unfortunately this spring I injured my hand in a bicycle/MTB crash and the hand is still in plaster but hopefully off for Main Event, otherwise I will compete with homemade carbon orthosis J. Really looking forward to this season and love the Santa Pod atmosphere and good track.”

Mark Smith will be looking for a stronger showing than in recent years and has put a lot of work into the bike over the offseason: “All is well with myself and the Warpspeed team. My bike has had a new complete spare Warpspeed engine built over the winter months; it’s been run up and all seem good. Warpspeed have refreshed my 1755 motor as well and both motors now have new Warpspeed RPM driven clutches in them. As for the bike itself it’s lost a bit of weight. As to the season ahead the team plan to do the 3 FIM-E rounds and some ACU just for any testing that needs to be done. My crew is the same for this year as it has been for 6 years now with crew chief Kerry Smith AKA the wife who’s main job this season is to stop me making stupid decisions she now calls all the shots. Mark Green (my crewman) is up to speed with the new clutch set up I hope lol! Sponsors this year are MPM Oils, Draper Tools, MDH repair centre, Greens plumbing, TW Metals and of course Stuart Crane’s support from Warpspeed Racing who for me without him I’d be nowhere: thanks Crane. The team would like to thanks Richard Stevens and Sam Stevens from MPM Oil for their continuing support this season. This year’s aim is to try and go faster beat my PB and keep it safe. The team is looking forward to this season with great things happening for us.”
