I FOUND CARPENTER RACING TO BE THE BEST , BUT LEE'S PERFORMANCE (LEE SHIERTS) DOES WONDERS WITH GSXR 1000'S. AS FAR AS HOW MUCH TO GO YOU HAVE TO TALK TO THEM AND TELL THEM WHAT YOU PLAN ON DOING WITH THE BIKE (STREET, DRAG, ETC...) SORRY, I DONT HAVE PHONE #'S FOR YOU

Has anyone tried the extrude hone process on a bike I know that the import car guys love it. Not going for an all out port job with it, just cleaning things up.

Here is my thought and what I do on my bikes. It is possible to get the ports "too smooth" it makes all kinds of flow separation and carburetion problems. The extrude hone process is a semi-solid shoved through the port. It will remove metal at a tight spot and that is incorrect for a port shape. My view is a port should have a slight taper in area as it moves toward the valve,to speed up the flow. My view is using air driven sand blasting is closer to correct than using a solid but the principle is the same.

In my case,I am not a "flow expert", but easy cleanup with an oval shape carbide double cut bur followed by sand blasting for port finish gives a similar performance on any model bike I have done. Later disassembly also shows no carbon build up at the valve seat, the ports stay clean. By careful masking to prevent sand from getting in the valve guides, etc, the combustion chamber and exhaust port is also done. This makes a nice smooth powerband and if the correct "grit" sand, makes the correct port finish.

I have taken a head with "polished ports" and only sand blasted them to show a performance gain and much improved driveability,so having ports "too smooth" is definetly a possibilty and adding uncontrolled metal removal to the mix a possibilty.

I was once sponsored by ExtrudeHone, Pittsburgh, PA. I had already flowed the heads on my VF750F Interceptor Superbike when ExtrudeHone examined the ports & thought they could make further improvements. After completion, back on the flow bench, intake flow average increase was 4 - 5%........Exhaust was around 3%. Made the powerband smoother too, (just my seat of the pants impression). I toured their factory once and gave the employees a riding demo on my Superbike out in the parking lot. The fixtures they used to attach the head to their machine includes dams and other devices to 'steer' the media towards or away from specific areas. The ExtrudeHone process is actually pretty simple, and amazing............they are the worlds largest buyer of silly putty!!!!! They blend various grades of abrasives, (everything from coarse sand to diamond dust) into the putty, then force it through a passageway under pressure to smooth all the surfaces in contact with it. When I toured the plant, they had a container filled with M1 Abrahms tank barrells to 'Hone'. It seems that, due to problems machining the barrells at the factory, high spots and some warping surfaced. The barrells were good for about 3 rounds, then they'd warp and jam. Extrudehone did their thing, Presto! Problem Solved!</font>

I can't advise you one way or the other about using ExtrudeHone over say, Byron Hines on a flowbench!!!!! Certainly ExtrudeHone doesn't have the experience to get the best out of every head, but it does have some merit!</font>
