View Full Version : MSD retard and Dyna 4000sp
Anyone know if the 4280 MSD retard control is compatable with Dyna 4000sp Has anyone actually tried it The schematics for the wiring are quite basic as it just goes between the pickups and the ignition box. I would just bolt it on a try it but I don't want to fry anythingsmileys/smiley3.gifI assume its function isjust todelay the ignition pulse.

Nope, not compatible. Use the TSRM-4

I'm just one of those guys that needs to know why something will or won't work. I'm a licensed auto tech and I need to have things proved out. For instance, what is it that causes the MSD 4280 not to be compatable with the Dyna 4000SP As I understand it the ignition signal from the pickupis delayed electronically to cause a retard when used with a MC2. The same signal is coming out of the pickup and instead of going directly to the MC2 it is routed to the retard box first. Now place the 4000SP in where the MC2 was, would the signal not still be delayed The only variable for me is a different rotor with a leading magnet that needs to be in place for the 4000SP.smileys/smiley23.gifIn my orginal post I am wondering has anyone actually tried this

Please, not the same thing. I've had other experiences with "incompatable" products as well. I would think from your profile being a technician yourself you would understand my point made above. I specialized in automotive computer controls and have 31 years in the trade, I've seen a lot of these incompatable situations. I've also seen things work well together when someone says it won't. Hence my quest for why. In my trade we tend to analyze theproducts to understand how they work in order to perform a correct repair.smileys/smiley2.gifEdited by: Crunch

I can't explain it in engineering terms but you touched on part of it with the different rotors. One setup is calibrated for the 1 magnet rotor and the other one (ours) is calibrated for the 2 magnet. Keep in mind that the TSRM does not work with the Dyna 2000 or Dyna S either. As I understand it the MSD retard uses the same type of resistors that the shift lights and 2 steps use. Ours is more digitally controlled. Have I tried it No, I am a firm believer in using the complete system from a single manufacturer.
Let me ask you this, what is to be gained by using the MSD retard What if the engine does actually run but the actual retard amount is half or double the setting Sounds like an expensive and unnecessaryexperiment to me.

Thank you for the explaination.smileys/smiley10.gifI must say the Dyna rev limiting is the best around.
Because I have two of them after I switched from MSD to Dynaand they are a 4 step retard. Sure would have liked to use one. Oh well back to Ebay they go.Edited by: Crunch
