In conjunction with the Pacific Street Car Association (PSCA) World Finals Top Alcohol Motorcycle was contested for the first time November 19th and 20th at California Speedway in Fontana California.
For several years west coast Funnybike and Pro-Mod racers have endured a dry spell for local competition. Steve Rice founding member of the now defunct Team Kawasaki Drag Racing decided the dry spell had lasted long enough.
“I began putting this event together about 3 months ago when gasoline and diesel prices got so high that you couldn’t afford to drive across the street” said Rice. “I got together with Mel from the PSCA and explained our racing dilemma here on the west coast; he was open to the idea of adding our bikes to his already large street car program. I wanted a program that would be open to all of the open class bikes here on this side of the country. I contacted racers and potential contingency sponsors for the event. It all went off without a hitch, I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.”
I asked Rice why he decided to create the class of Top Alcohol Motorcycle and not just staying with the already existing Funnybike and Pro-Mod classes. He replied “Although the bikes are the same we need to have a class that is identifiable by all race fans not just motorcycle fans. It also needs to be saleable to racetracks we will run at and organizations we will run with. I hope the name change will also give the racer a feeling of pride when they realize that their bikes are ‘top’ not just ‘funny’.”
Rice also added, “Here on the west coast there are a couple dozen motorcycles either in moth balls or are currently being built that have no where to compete locally. Ideally we would like a well prepped venue held over a 2 day event. Our local organization the NMRA is an excellent operation run by Bill and DeeDee Peters, however their events are more geared towards the sportsman racer where the entire event can be done in an afternoon. Our type of racing is more labor intensive, turn around time is usually much longer than a Super Gas or E.T. bike may take.”
Ten racers in all attended from west coast area, northern and southern Ca. Arizona and Utah were all represented and qualifying saw personal quickest and fastest passes for several racers. Pat Watson Jr. (Suz) of Vacaville, Ca. was low qualifier with a personal best E.T. and track record of 6.830 @ 192.82 while Steve Rice (Kaw) of Costa Mesa, Ca. had top MPH at 214.42 @ 6.963. 3rd, Darrel Meadows (Suz) of Sacramento, Ca. @ 7.22, 4th Pete Steuri (Kaw) of Salt Lake City, Utah. @ 7.246, 5th Joe Bojorques (Kaw) of Tujunga, Ca.@ 7.525, 6th Steve Kyllingstad (Kaw) of Camp Verde, Az.@ 7.678, 7th Roy Sears(Kaw) of Fresno Ca. @ 7.86, 8th Mike Seaberry (Kaw) of Union City, Ca. @ 7.936 9th Shane Burrows (Suz) of Fresno, Ca. @ 8.609, 10th John Tarranova (Kaw) of Phoenix Az. @ 8. 802.
For eliminations track conditions could not have been better, the California Dragway personnel and the PSCA did an excellent job. Weather conditions were in the high 70’s low humidity and only a slight breeze. First round it was Watson over Tarranova 7.12 to 10.90, Rice over a broken Burrows 7.035, Steuri over a broken Sears with 7.07, Kyllinstad over Bojorques 8.070 to 8.456, Seaberry over Meadows 9.43. Second round, Watson on the bye 7
