RAIN POSTPONES MAX V/SPENCERCYCLE SPRING OPEN AT ROCKINGHAM

Noting that "moisture and motorcycles don't mix," Rockingham Dragway owner Steve Earwood reluctantly pulled the plug on the Max V/Spencercycle.com Spring Bike Open Saturday, rescheduling the race for Mothers Day weekend, May 10-11.

"Based on the rain we've had and what was predicted for today and Sunday, we felt the best decision was to save everyone at least one night at the hotel," Earwood said. "It's not something we really wanted to do because there was a lot of building momentum. But you can't control the weather."

The weather problems will simply delay Barry Henson's bid to repeat as champion of the World's Fastest Street Bike Series, one his company, Velocity Racing, now sponsors.

The Davie, Fla., motorcycle parts manufacturer chased down Salisbury's Doug "Underdog" Ray in the last race of the 2002 season to earn the "World's Fastest" distinction and stamp himself as the 2003 favorite.

In addition to the World's Fastest Street Bike Series, the Spring Open also features the Schnitz Racing Outlaw Pro Street Series, the Mickey Thompson Tires 60-Inch Pro Sport Bike Series, the Honda-Suzuki of Sanford 5.60 Heads-Up Series and the popular new Cycle Concepts Rock Heavy Series for riders weighing at least 240 pounds.

There will be no change in the original race schedule. Gates now will open on Saturday, May 10, at 9 a.m. with time trials at 10 a.m. and pro qualifying at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Gates will open Sunday, May 11, at 9 a.m. with time trials at 10:30 a.m. and eliminations starting at 1 p.m.

Adult tickets for the event are $20 a day or $35 for a special two-day pass. Children six to 12 are $5 daily. Children under six are free when accompanied by a ticketed adult. All tickets include pit access and free parking in Rockingham Dragway's main lot although VIP parking is available inside the track for an additional $5.
