NOTES AND QUOTES: As defending champion of the event for the past two years, Angelle and Star Racing were eager to compete once again on their home track during the Advance Auto Parts NHRA Southern Nationals. With a new engine and transmission package, Angelle qualified a solid 4th and set her sights on adding another victory to the 2001 season. Unfortunately, the Team Winston/Star Racing crew were still learning how to adapt and maximize the power of their new package and came up two rounds short of the intended goal. Despite the uncharacteristically early exit, it was still a great weekend for all involved as valuable information was gained in the quest to perfect the already potent performance of the new Vortex cylinder head and 6-speed transmission.
George Bryce: "Man, I just knew we would have gone faster than that. We had problems with our #1 engine and had to go to the spare. I know itís an excuse, but it was a little slower than our race engine...the one that won in Houston. Just like always, though, we kept digging and pulled to within 5 or 6 hundredths of the winner and runner up. We will do better."
Angelle: "We wanted to win here for three Atlanta races in a row, especially with all of the local and Star Racing fans that were there. I could have done better against Geno...my reaction time was off. George said they can make more power than this, so Iím looking forward to improving when we head to Englishtown in a few weeks. "
