WORLD'S FASTEST STREET BIKES RETURN TO ROCKINGHAM
DRAGWAY
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. Doug Ray may have to
trade in his nickname for something more appropriate.
With one Mickey Thompson World's Fastest Street Bike Series title to
his credit and a second in sight thanks to a victory in the 2002
season-opener, "Underdog" no longer seems to fit Ray, the veteran from
Salisbury who'll be anything but this week (July 27-28) when the
two-wheel contingent reconvenes at Rockingham Dragway for the fifth
annual Schnitz Summer Sizzler.
Despite the presence of factory touring pro Ryan Schnitz of Decatur,
Ind., Alphonso Thompson of Blades, Del., Chris Williams of Ocoee,
Fla., James Lauer of Chicago and fellow Carolinians Allen Kea of Elm
City and Trevor Altman of Forest City, as the current points leader,
Ray definitely is the man to beat in the second of four events
comprising the 2002 World's Fastest Series.
In addition to competition in the Mickey Thompson-backed World's
Fastest series, the Summer Sizzler also will crown champions in the
Schnitz Racing Outlaw Pro Street class and the new 60inch Pro Sport
Bike class as well as in the F.B.R. Shop "Wild Bike" class, the
Honda-Suzuki of Sanford 5.60 heads-up class and a pair of ET bracket
classes.
Fayetteville's Johnny "Airtime" Locklear and Joseph Long of Hiealeah,
Fla., are the points leaders in Pro Sport Bike and Outlaw Pro Street,
respectively, as part of a series jointly hosted by Rockingham Dragway
and Maryland International Raceway.
Gates open at 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's program
will feature World's Fastest and Outlaw Pro Street qualifying at 3
p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. along with bracket eliminations starting at 2
p.m. Sunday's racing begins with time trials at 10:30 a.m. and
eliminations at 2 p.m.
Tickets for the event are $20 daily, $5 for children six-to-12 with
children under six free when accompanied by a ticketed adult. Each
ticket includes pit access privileges and free parking in the track's
main lot.
