QUALIFIES #2 AT INDY, #1 IN AHDRA
This past weekend
sent the Vance & Hines / Drag Specialties team to the
AHDRA race in Indianapolis, The weather started with pleasant
sunny skies and cool temperatures, creating good racing conditions.
Right out of the
gate the entire Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley's class were
running quick. And every round of qualifying was quicker.
In round one of qualifying, Doug ran a 6.548 et / 216.38 mph
pass taking the #1 spot. Round two of qualifying, Doug stepped
it up a bit with a 6.518 et / 213 mph run. Steve Stordeur
also picked up the pace with a 6.43 et / 217.49 mph pass taking
the #1 qualifying spot. Round three of qualifying, Doug again
sped it up to a 6.452 et / 213.77, putting him just a split
second behind Steve.
In the first round
of eliminations, Doug faced Doc Hopkins. Doug continued with
his six second passes, running a 6.569 et / 214.89 advancing
to the second round. Entering the second round of eliminations,
Doug faced Drums Brancaccio. Drums ran one of his best runs
this year, upsetting Vancil with a 6.501 et / 215.72 mph vs.
Doug's 6.604 et / 215.03. "I tend to bring out the best
in every one. Drum's ran a great pass," said Doug after
the race. Drum's ended up going to the finals again Steve
Stordeur, with the win going to Steve and an AHDRA record
setting run of 6.378 et / 220.58 mph.
With just two AHDRA
races left in the schedule, Rockingham (Oct 4-5) and Vegas
(Oct 18-19), a third consecutive championship for the Vance
& Hines / Drag Specialties team looks strong. Doug won
the IHRA Top Fuel Harley championship in 2001 and 2002. He
is currently #1 in the points in the 2003 Screamin' Eagle
Nitro Harley class of the AHDRA, with the second place rider
trailing by 442 points (Points totals from ahdra.com 9/17/03).

Joliet, IL in an NHRA exhibition run this weekend, September
26-28. The top 14 riders of the AHDRA are qualified to run
in the Nitro Harley exhibition runs at the NHRA event. Look
