PLEASANT RACING BOWLING GREEN KENTUCKY
2003 AMRA WORLD FINALS
Sitting in the driver's seat of the
Winnebago Brave we head south for the AMRA World Finals at
Beach Bend Raceway Park. The forecast looks good with temps
in the 70's and lots of sunshine. As expected the park is
packed with fans. A huge turnout of Harley Davidson enthusiasts.
Into round one of qualifying we noticed what a great job Beach
Bend starting line crew has done prepping the track. Crew
chief Dick Boxell knows we can step up the Barnett clutch
and expect the track will handle it. Smoking the tire in the
burnout box I remember our last quarter mile pass was a 8.88
at 147MPH, hoping to better this I stage the bike, FLASH were
off, moving slightly left and pulling the front wheel most
of the track I can feel it's a better pass. We run 8.25 at
151.53MPH, knowing we need to run 7.80 or 7.50 range to be
competitive we head for the trailer to find more horsepower
.
With the addition of Don Coontz to our team last week we know
we have more knowledge in the pits. Don is the builder and
tuner of a blown alcohol injected altered dragster, his ability
and knowledge in drag racing comes as a great asset to our
team. We pull the top end down and don shows us some of their
way of doing things.
Profuel to the lanes the announcer shouts. We are almost ready
but opt to wait for 3rd round of qualifying to make sure everything
is right. Into the burnout box I go, as I crack the throttle
I can feel the thunder and know we have picked up some horsepower.
With the smell of nitro in the air and the thunder between
my legs I ease to the line, FLASH were off, hard right the
bike moves, I pull and pull but no saving this one, I have
to lift coasting through the lights, we run 8.64 at 153.07
knowing this wont help our qualifying effort we head for the
pits hoping to make the field with our 8.25.
We are qualified #8 this means we have to run the #1 qualifier
Mike Mulderink. Good morning from Beach !
Bend Raceway Park on a beautiful Sunday morning, the sun is
shining, the track is well prepped and there's a full crowd
for today's race. To the lanes Topfuel, Profuel and Topgas
the announcer shouts, making some adjustments to our S&S
carb our team is now ready. Into the burnout box the starter
points, whacking the throttle hard I melt some rubber, the
motor feels strong. As I ease to the line the sweet smell
of nitro enters my helmet, I AM PUMPED, I am into the lights
first then Mulderink , FLASH were off, at the 1,000 foot mark
the motor noses over and leans out, we missed our tune up
a little but this being our third race on the new bike we
are confident to have a handle on it next year. Our 8.03 at
157.36 to Mikes 7.38 at 173.76, Mikes pass is the quickest
and fastest pass ever recorded on a Profuel Nitro Harley,
setting both ends of the record we know their team is ecstatic.
Good job goes out to the Mulderink Team and Nungesser Racing
for the Fast Cat Motor Mike uses. !
Thanks to all our sponsors for a great first season. We couldn't
of done this without them. Thanks goes out to all the fans
and most of all I need to thank my Crew Chief Dick Boxell
