Furr Ends
Dallas Day in the Red
NHRA O'Reilly Nationals - The Texas Motorplex,
Ennis, TX
Qualifying third, Furr finally thought he had a handle on
his Black and Silver Belt Drives Limited Nitro Harley tune-up
for eliminations. Clearly focused on the bike, human error
cost Furr the semi-final round victory for a place in the
final.
Round one eliminations
in the eight-bike field was sweet for Furr. "We had Jack
Romine first round. We had lane choice. We took the left lane
because the shut down in the right lane wanted to pull me
toward the wall and I didn't like that sensation. Everyone
was running well in the left lane anyway. I think that the
track was better Sunday than it was on Saturday." Furr
had an .050 light. "With the same tune-up, it pulled
the motor down from our qualifying a 6.46 to a 6.570 at 211.56
miles per hour. I think the same happened to Jack. He qualified
with a 6.52 and ran a 6.64 against me. With that round, we
won lane choice over Doug Vancil with a 6.571."
In the semi-final
end with a 6.498 at 209.35 to Vancil's 6.396, it didn't matter
what Furr ran. "I was a little antsy on the lights. I
had a -.012 red light. We lost. I don't know what else to
say."
Through round one
belt breakage, motor change, significant tune-up modification
then consistent 6.40+ passes, Furr has his confidence back.
His team is more unified and the testing days are over. "Rex
Harris and John Sparks worked real hard all weekend. We've
been toying with some ideas of making some fairly big changes
on the motorcycle for the AHDRA Finals next weekend in Las
Vegas. We're going to try to get a good lap in on Saturday
morning. Then we'll make those substantial changes and step
this thing up."
