Eliminations

Tonglet raced to back-to-back wins this season inPro Stock Motorcycle after he rode his Nitro Fish Racing Suzuki to a 6.843 pass at 194.35 defeating teammate and defending world champion, Jerry Savoie. This is Tonglet’s 12th career win and second at Atlanta Dragway.

 “I’ve got a great group of guys behind me who get the bike back to running in no time,” Tonglet said. “To be able to go to the third race of the season and get both of ‘em (bikes) in the final round; it is just unbelievable. This won’t be the last time both bikes are in the finals and we’re going to put on a good show.”

Tonglet raced past Cory Reed, Andrew Hines and Scott Pollacheck before entering the final round. Savoie defeated Matt Smith, Hector Arana Jr. and No.1 qualifier Eddie Krawiec on his way to the finals.

The 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season continues at the 29th annual Menards NHRA Heartland Nationals presented by Minties May 19-21 at Heartland Park Topeka.

First Round

Savoie is 8 – 7 against Smith in prior events. Smith gets out of the gate first and starts to pull away. He extends his lead to half track, then Savoie begins to make up ground. Savoie pulls even past the 1000 foot mark, then is able to get around Smith and take the stripe for the win. Jerry Savoie’s incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.009), 330 ft(-0.012), 660ft(-0.014), 1,000ft(-0.008). MOV: 0.0026 seconds (approximately 9 inches).

Angelle Sampey has 4 wins here. She starts the day with 400 round wins which is second most in the motorcycle class an 24th among all pro drivers (Andrew Hines has 429). This is the first time Gladstone and Sampey have faced each other in eliminations. Sampey gets out of the gate first but Gladstone starts making up ground quickly. Sampey started drifting out of the groove, Gladstone goes around her before they get to half track and pulls away for the win. Joey Gladstone’s incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.012), 330 ft(-0.004), 660ft(0.007), 1,000ft(0.026). MOV: 0.0501 seconds (approximately 14 feet).

LE Tonglet won this race in 2010. His #2 starting position is his best since at any event since he started from the top spot at this race in 2011. His win in Charlotte was the 11th of his career and that ties him for 10th place in the motorcycle class. Reed and Tonglet have each won 2 times against the other in prior events. Reed leaves too soon and goes red giving Tonglet the win. Tonglet goes right down the groove with his quickest pass of the weekend.

Pollacheck hangs on and takes the stripe for the holeshot win. Scotty Pollacheck’s incremental margins: 60ft(0.052), 330 ft(0.063), 660ft(0.067), 1,000ft(0.057). 4:46 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 23 percent, barometer 29.15 inches, adjusted altitude 2,213 feet, track temperature 115 degrees. This is Savoie’s first final round this year, the 17th of his career. Tonglet won last weekend in Charlotte. This is his 16th final round. Tonglet gets the holeshot and starts to pull away. Savoie hits the throttle, moves about five feet and the bike breaks. Tonglet goes on through for the win for the second race in a row.

Qualifying – Saturday

Krawiec raced his Screamin’ Eagle / Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson to a 6.849 pass at 194.21 to secure his first No. 1 qualifier of the season and 34th of his career.

“This is a big race for us, the motorcycles and all of the NHRA,” Kraweic stated. “It’s definitely a tough field out there. I think for Pro Stock Motorcycle it’s going to be a nice tight battle.  I’m confident in myself and my abilities. We just need to string it all together.”

Kraweic will face Steve Johnson in the first round of eliminations. LE Tonglet qualified second in his Nitro Fish Racing Suzuki with a 6.858 run at 194.24 and will go to the starting line against 2016 Road to the Future Award winner Cory Reed.

Qualifying – Friday

Angelle Sampey is the current No 1. Qualifier for Pro Stock Motorcycle after a partial qualifying session due to inclement weather. NHRA officials ended racing for the day at the Lucas Oil NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

Sampey powered her Team Liberty Racing Victory Magnum bike to a 6.904-second pass at 193.16 mph during the lone qualifying session of the day.

“To leave the starting line and go straight, shift on time and stay under power all the way to the finish line was the best feeling I’ve had in a long time,” Sampey stated. “I didn’t even care where it was on the ladder, just the fact that I made a full pull on the first round. I was so excited.”

Hector Arana is second in his Lucas Oil Buell motorcycle after a 6.911 pass at 194.13. Matt Smith sits third with his Victory Gunner motorcycle.

DeSantis hits the throttle, gets about five feet and the bike shuts off, not sure why. Hope gets about 100 feet out and loses power.

Rawling’s bike is sluggish off the line, drifts to the left, then she clicks it off early. Hall’s bike was struggling all the way through the run.

Surber’s bike hits the throttle, the bike bounces up, then down, then back up again. He gets about sixty feet out and backs off the throttle. Berry makes a clean pass to take the pole for now.

Surber left the line and started drifting to the left. She gets close to the wall around half track and had to back off the throttle. Ellis goes right down the groove with a good pass to take the pole for now.

Smith completes her burnout, something starts leaking from the engine and she has to click it off. Reed makes a clean pass and gets in the second spot for now.

Arana Jr. on a good pass, out in front at the 330 foot mark, then the bike noses over, not sure why. Arana Sr. goes right down the groove with a good pass to take the top spot for now.

Sampey goes right down the groove with a good pass to take the top spot for now. Stoffer has problems and is off the throttle early.

Smith makes a clean pass and gets in the third spot for now. Johnson’s bike was sluggish all the way through the run.

Officials consistently worked throughout the day to dry the track but as the temperature dropped and misting continued, racing for the day was called at 6:25 p.m.

NHRA Mello Yello Series qualifying is set to resume on Saturday at 1:15 p.m.
