The 2022 World Cup Finals featured unseasonable weather temperatures in the high 70’s all week long! The weather was perfect for the team tuners, not too hot, and not too cold.

On Thursday, Jason Dunigan took the provisional number one qualifying spot with a 6.528, however, Rodney Williford wasn’t on the property yet. On Friday in the first qualifying session of the day Rodney threw down a 6.373 to take the number qualifying spot that could not be overturned by his competitors.

Jordan Haase - World Cup Finals 2022
Jordan Haase had a great time despite missing the field.

Jordan Haase and Justin Shakir both struggled during qualifying, not making the eight-bike field with seven-second times. On Saturday, during the final qualifying session, Shakir would finally pull it together to run a 6.548 to get into the field. With Shakir, that would bump Curtis Brown out to not make the show on Sunday with Haase.

The weekend started out strong for Jason Dunigan and the DME Racing team with a strong qualifying position running a 6.528 for the number two qualifying spot. This was the fifth year Team Tuner Andy Sawyer has attended the World Cup Finals, so he was prepared for the conditions that World Cup throws at the Pro Street Motorcycles. With a win already under his belt from 2019, he was determined to get Dunigan to the winner’s circle.

Despite qualifying number two, the team was quietly struggling during qualifying, chasing an issue. But after a few late nights and lots of input from his team, they were able to reign in their program for Sunday’s eliminations. Sawyer’s strategy for the day was ‘A to B’ with small turns on the dial. And Dunigan did his job riding round after round.

The final round against reigning champion Rodney Williford would be the toughest round of the day. But with eliminations getting pushed off until 8pm, both riders had the same disadvantage of rapidly changing conditions. Team owner Dimey Eddinger, who could not attend the event, sent a text right before the bikes rolled into the water box and asked what the tuning setup was for the finals as he watched from home. “We are set up for a solid 40’s ‘A-to-B,'” responded Sawyer.

When the bulbs dropped, Dunigan launched straight down the track while Williford struggled to control his beast as the front kept coming up on him. Dunigan’s win light came on, and the board said 6.507 at 231.60 mph! It was an emotional win for Dunigan, with his entire family in attendance. The trophy rode up front in the motorhome for the trip back to Michigan.

Thanks to all the riders that participated in this year’s World Cup Finals, and to Platinum General Services for supporting the class.

This was Ricky Wood’s first World Cup Finals event and one he will not forget!
