UK racer Neil Midgley made a stout defense of his UK Championship number 1 plate at the first round of the British Championship at Santa Pod on the weekend of April 7-10 after capturing the number 1 qualifying position and the event win.

The event was unusual in many ways, with spectators discouraged from attending due to the waterlogged parking and camping areas and cancellation of the Pro Car classes, the atmosphere was more akin to a glorified test session and the Top Fuel Bike class the only way in which the relatively small number of attending fans and crews could get their first nitro fix of the year.

The cancellation of the Pro car classes permitted a three-per-day qualifying opportunity over two days, ample chances to clear the cobwebs and test the developments made over the long cold winter months.

Midgley finished qualifying in number one position of the four qualifying machines, with a modest 6.22 secs @ an early shut off 184.32 mph.

So to race day where he was to face Al Smith on the unique and Phil Baimbridge conceived `Rocket’ 3-cylinder machine. Midgely got the `rub of the green’ when Smith was disqualified for taking out the top-end reflectors when leading after Midgely lifted after experiencing a severe tire shake.

On to the final round, and Midgely was up against the multiple British Championship winning number two qualifying rider Steve Woollatt who had dispatched Dutch visitor Rene van den Berg in the first round with a fine 6.08 secs @ 232.59 mph, which proved to be the best run in the class of the weekend.

However, Midgley took the win, cutting a light against his opponent and keeping the momentum going after Woollatt had to lift after drifting towards the centreline.

The King Racing / Cannon Motorsports collaboration look forward to building on their early Championship lead at the postponed Festival of Power event this weekend at Santa Pod, UK.
