ELIMINATIONS

Story By Tom McCarthy

On Sunday, April 23, 2017, Jay Turner, of Jay Turner Racing won his, third race of the four race season with the National Hot Rod Association.  Jay defeated number one qualifier Bobby Malloy in the final round with a 6.21 @ 221 mph pass to Bobby’s 6.31 @ 209 mph bid.  Jay’s 6.21 was the quickest elapsed time of the weekend that featured a full eight bike field of Top Fuel Harleys.

Jay had 231 championship points, the most amassed so far, going into this race.  By qualifying #2 and attaining his third win, Jay and his team will extend their points lead over Bobby Malloy, who will advance from #3 in points to the #2 spot when points are tallied.  Bobby will bump Rickey House into the third spot in the point’s race.  With four races remaining in the T/F Harley series, there is still time for the heavy hitters to make up ground.

Bobby Malloy, who was the runner-up at this race, ran a 6.24 during Q-1, then in Q-2 posted a 6.242 and skipped the third qualifying run, he was all dialed in.  During eliminations on Sunday Bobby defeated Kevin Boyer with a 6.28 during E-1, and then in the semi-final round went 6.22 in defeating Rickey House.  His 6.31 against Jay Turner in the final round was his only step out of the 6.20’s all weekend.  With this kind of consistency, there is no doubt that he’s a win looking to happen.

This race saw excellent side by side racing from the T/F Harley machines.  Excellent performance from Randall Andras, Rickey House, Mike Pelrine, Mike Scott, Brian Jernigan, and Kevin Boyer filled out the eight bike field.  A big tip of the hat goes out to Tak Shigematsu of Blue Panther in Japan for flying in for this race to compete with Don Johnson (DJ).  The formidable pair are pooling their knowledge on developing a Pro Charger for their T/F bikes and hope to be at remaining NHRA events.
