POTW: G Squared Motorsports – Chip Ellis

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

From early on at the NHRA Mac Tools US Nationals we had a sneaking suspicion that Chip Ellis would end up being our “Photo of the Week”. Actually, it was from the first lap on down. Due to having no previous NHRA experience Ellis was the first bike on the line for the first qualifying session. That pass produced a 7.20 which put him in the second position. Pretty good for a rookie and with George Bryce tuning on what is still a relatively new bike, there was surely more to come. “More” came quickly as on the next lap Ellis grabbed the pole and would not relinquish it as his 7.13 #1 spot was later lowered to a 7.11. Coming into eliminations Ellis had the quick lap of 3 of the 5 qualifying sessions and the two quickest laps of the event. With Chip’s years of experience – and the ease at which he performed in front of unquestionably the largest crowd he run in front of – he would no doubt go deep into eliminations. Major “Photo of the Week” material.

Ahh, but it was not to pass. A faulty throttle cable kept the S&S Buell on the sidelines for the first round of eliminations. What might have been…..

Still, Chip left his mark. Our statisticians are still working on but we still believe Chip is the first-ever competitor to qualify in a pro class in his first appearance at the US Nationals. That is of course except for the first US Nationals where it was EVERYBODY’s first time.
