written by Dick Boxell

Redneck Express started it’s 2022 drag racing season with the Mid-West Drag racing series in the Pingel sponsored Top Fuel motorcycle class at Memphis International April 22-24, 2022. This 1/8 mile race will be one of the last races at Memphis as the property has been sold.

The crew for this race consisted of Crew chief Sharon Hand, Steve Legendre, Jim Fox, and Dick Boxell, with Steves’s son Steve Legendre, his wife, and little girl Plus Chuck Hunnycutt and Lee Woehele coming in Saturday. Not being able to attend were Gary and GT Tonglet as they were supporting LE at Houston in NHRA ProStock Bike.

Chris has been super busy during the downtime with the high workload at his business and redesigning the fuel and Ignition systems on the Redneck Express.

Chris had Three complete powerplants ready for action, with Patton in the bike, Chris and Sharon arrive Friday morning we set up the pit area and ready the bike for Round 1 of Qualifying, we fire the bike to check And it barks pretty good!!

Since Memphis had suffered downpours of rain Wednesday they call the day to attempt to dry the track out from water seeping up under the track

Saturday Q1, Left Lane

They prep the track and we get the call. We ready the bike and tow up to the staging lanes. Sharon runs the starter while Fox runs the squirter, starts the bike, Chris rolls through the water box, Fox Wipes the front tire and Chris does his burnout.

Dick and Steve,(mostly Steve), along with Chuck push the bike back in the direction of Fox. Chris lines up Prestages, Sharon turns on the computer, Chris stages, the lights flash and it’s on a run but Chris feels it go fat and clicks it off Steve goes to and tow Chris back but the pits are so crowded they push the bike most of the way back and we help get it back to the pit. Once we get it back, we blow it out and do the leak down. ALL good, and the plugs are perfect!

Chris downloads the data but the clutch and fuels systems did not activate for some reason, so it ran on the primaries all the way Memphis gremlins continue to plague the RNE.

Friday Q2, Right Lane

We ready the bike again and tow up to the staging lanes. Sharon runs the starter while Fox runs the squirter, starts the bike, Chris rolls through the waterbox, Fox Wipes the front tire and Chris does his burnout.

Dick, Steve,(mostly Steve) along with Chuck push the bike back with the direction from Fox. Chris lines up Prestages, Sharon turns on the computer, Chris stages, the lights flash and the chute pops out right after the hit! It runs a 5.13 dragging the chute fully open! Puts us #2 on the ladder.

Steve goes and tows Chris partway back due to the crowded pit situation. We blow it out and do the leak down,#2 shows a little but still runnable. Racepack shows data again this time but shows no clutch movement, Gremlins again

Dick Boxell, Steve,(mostly Steve again) along with Chuck push the bike back with the direction from Fox. Chris lines up Prestages, Sharon turns on the computer, Chris stages, the lights flash, Mitch gets off the line first and leads down the track, with Chris close behind both bikes fighting the crown and Mitch crosses and Chris clicks it and immediately the bike darts left and crossed behind and into Mitches lane. After a considerable time it is determined that we are both are DQ’d. Shortly after E1 at 9:00 PM they call the event due to weather.
