Top Fuel Motorcycle Ready to Take on 2024

Story & Photos Tom McCarthy

With the appearance of Top Fuel motorcycles as a class on the 2024 ledger for the NHRA, fans and racers want to know when and where the big thunder bikes can be see this season. Nothing assaults the senses quite like motorcycles making more than 1,000 horsepower, belching flames at the hit of the throttle, and carrying the front tire in the air well-passed half-track. For sheer violence and showmanship, Top Fuel motorcycles are the apex predators of motorcycle drag racing.

Top Fuel bikes come in two distinct varieties and are crowd-pleasers at every event. Imagine zeroing to 100 MPH in 1.25 seconds and cresting 200mph in under four seconds. These motorcycles are simply in a league of their own in every way. Anyone who pilots one must first put on a “Blast Vest” either on or under their leather suit, which serves as a roll-cage. These bikes are not for the weak or meek.

Class newcomer Mac McAdams threw down a successful test session back in October of 2023 aboard Jaakko ”Jaska” Salakari’s Top Fuel motorcycle and is now tentatively working out the details to participate in the NHRA event at Virginia Motorsports Park June 21-23, 2024. More details to follow!

The “I-4” bikes are in-line four-cylinder motorcycles, and they generate well north of 1000hp and will cover 1,320 feet of race track in about 5.8 seconds at close to 250 MPH on a good pass. The two-cylinder hybrid V-Twin bikes of Harley Davidson decent are also capable of over 1,000HP output and generally run in the mid-six-second range at close to 230 MPH on average. But the big V-Twins are knocking on the door of the five-second zone. 2024 may well be the year the TFH, aka “Top Fuel Harley” bikes, officially break into the 5’s. History is on the horizon and 2024 is very likely the year this will happen.

Top Fuel Motorcycles and the NHRA have agreed to a four-race schedule for the 2024 season, with races slated for Chicago May 17-19, Virginia June 21-23, Brainerd August 15-18, and Charlotte September 20-22. The exact rules for NHRA Top Fuel motorcycles are under discussion by the relevant parties, and in fact, all the nuts and bolts of negotiations relative to this class are in a state of flux as of this writing in January 2024.

Suffice it to indicate authentic Top Fuel motorcycles with superchargers and burning nitromethane will be welcomed at the events above. The details of this are currently under discussion and will evolve. The financial intricacies and many related topics are also in progress.

Also for the nitromainiacs of the V-Twin persuasion, the AHDRA (All Harley Drag Racing Association) will have Top Fuel Harleys at the following events in 2024:
