Newsletter #8 2012 – the FHRA Nitro Nationals Preview

If the last months focus have mainly been on Tierp Arena and Santa Pod, the time has now come for other tracks and organizers to step into the spolight for the forthcoming period.

This weekend alone there are four events ongoing that are part of the EDRS European Drag Racing Series; At Hell Raceway in the north of Norway, In Bechyne Czech Republic, at Borlänge in the central part of Sweden and at Alastaro Raceway Finland which also will host the FIA & UEM European Drag Racing Championship next week.

In general this time of year is mainly about administration and event support for Speedgroup. The teams are of course very skilled and “self-going” as are the event organizers. Speedgroups role as administrator of the championships and series at the moment is mainly in communication. To see that relevant information reaches the right recipients and sort any questions or problems that occur continuously for teams, event organizers or any other party connected.

In addition we co-operate with medias and also co-ordinate our own TV-production from the FIA and UEM European Drag Racing Championship.. so a lot is going on at the moment. And we are of course delighted to provide an insight to some of the excitement and let you meet interesting profiles in the sport through the Speedgroup Club Europe Online Newsletters, which we publish before and after every FIA/UEM Championship event.

In the new entry and results data system, we currently have 1125 drivers and riders entered in the system from all over Europe. Swedish time keeping system- and software developer Nitroz co-operate with Speedgroup around the database entry system, which have proven to work well and make entry handling easier for as well the teams as the organizers. And anyone interested can check results (from events operating Time Tree timing system), drivers profiles, entry lists and more online at www.dragracing.eu anytime!

Entry for FIA & UEM European Drag Racing Championship round #4 and #5 is open at at www.dragracing.eu

Round #4 is the NitrOlympx August 10-12th at HockenheimRing, Germany and round #5 the Scandinavian Internationals August 23-26th at Tierp Arena, Sweden.

Speegroup have a well-functioning co-operation with organizer FHRA which operates race events at the tracks at Alastaro, Motorpark and Kalajoki. Pictured FHRA president Tapio Valja (second from the left) with Speedgroup´s Åsa Kinnemar and Michael Gullqvist (far right who is also competing in FIA Pro Modified). Second from the right Kjell Pettersson, FIA Championship points co-ordinator and for the last two seasons also race director at Tierp Arena.

UEM Drag Bike Championship Preview

UEM Top Fuel Bike:
4 teams entered for an 8 bike elimination ladder

In Championship Points lead: Ian King

Winner at the last event: Peter Svensson

Notes: Last years scenario is not going to repeat itself as none of the finalists Samu Kemppainen and Petri Paljakka are on the entry list in the class this time (however Kemppainen is entered in Super Twin Bike). If nothing unexpected happens Rikard Gustafsson will leave this event having passed Peter Svensson in points. Svensson would we are sure love to win the championship but don’t run the max number of events that can be counted, but Gustafsson does. And so does the other Funny Biker in the field, Nils Lagerlöf. Ian King set a new personal best during the last event. That was Tierp Arena and this is Alastaro. Interesting to see how well the track can take the power from the Puma Engineering Gulf Oil Top Fuel Bike and how well team King can manage to adjust to it. Kai Selkämaa does a welcome return in the championship at his home track and Kai is always a serious contender for round wins, skilled and consistent when all holds together.. so why not at Alastaro during the FHRA Nitro Nationals?

UEM Super Twin Bike:
13 teams entered for an 8 bike elimination ladder

In Championship Points lead: Nate Gagnon

Winner at the last event: Per Bengtsson

Notes: European Champion Per Bengtsson is missing this event (by choice) and the entry list have a strong presence of Finnish contenders. Traditionally Super Twin Bike is strong in the Nordic region so that comes as no suprise.

So far this season the only non-European championship rider, Nate Gagnon from Canada, has impressed and on paper have the best performing bike entered at this event. However Gagnons´ team mate and host in Europe, Finnish Samu Kemppainen has been setting new personal bests and he will be interesting to follow at Alastaro.

Jaska Salakari is the entertainer and crowd pleaser in the class, but have no history of great consistency yet. Stable championship riders from central Europe competing at Alastaro include Martijn de Haas and Job Heezen, both with capacity to win rounds. The Norwegian teams have so far not been successful, but that can change any day. The riders skills Jan Sturla Hegré and Svein Olav Rolfstad hold can not be disputed. Let´s hope the technical problems from the last event at Tierp Arena have been sorted and they are in for a great and successful race at Alastaro!

Popular Super Twin Bike rider Jaska Salakari on home turf at Alastaro – the FHRA Nitro Nationals is the first UEM Championship event for Jaska this season. At Tierp Arena during the Sweden Internationals, Kari Rajala was in competition on the same bike Jaska will be running.

UEM Pro Stock Bike:
6 teams entered for an 8 bike elimination ladder

In Championship Points lead: Ulf Ögge one point (!) ahead of Kalle Lyrén. Both riders are on site
Winner at the last event: Ulf Ögge

Notes: Weak field in numbers at this event, but the teams that are on site perform at a high level and the UEM Drag Bike championship winner is among them.. Fredrik Fredlund may well challenge Ögge and Lyrén for round wins..Both Ögge and Fredlund will be after a new European ET record!
