Many teams of the AMRA made the long journey from all parts of the country to faceoff at the 25th Annual Jim McClure Nitro Nationals in Rockingham, North Carolina. Whether you’re riding a TopFuel bike or making laps on an ET bike, all racers have to battle the bike, the elements, and the road. Several members of Pro Mod experienced all of the above this past weekend.

Henry and Robert Stanton and trusted crew chief Mike Stocum of Rochester Cycle, have had nothing but problems this past season with their travels from upstate New York. The trip to Rockingham, North Carolina showed no mercy on them or their race rig, as they had a major axel failure in the mountains near Virginia. With parts not available, Henry was forced to pull out the stops and buy a new trailer. This is how crazy drag racing can make a man!

Larry Pratt and Clayton Danford of Iron Eagle showed up early to do some testing on Friday. Unfortunately after a few test hits, they had a major engine failure and were unable to make repairs making it a short and painful weekend for the team. Fortunately, these guys are tough and will be back stronger than ever next season.

Saturday’s qualifying session proved to be the best conditions of the season. Temperatures were in the mid 70’s and traction was up, all great signs from the drag racing gods. Ryan Oehler took the number one qualifying position with a record run in round two of qualifying. Team Crew Chief, Bad Brad made the decision to do a full cam swap in between rounds and it proved to be the key ingredient in their record setting run. Ryan was able to lay down a great pass with and ET of 5.227 in the 1/8 mile and just missing the 1/4 mile record by .002 with an ET of 8.309.

Henry Stanton took the number two spot in Saturday’s qualifying with his best performance of the year, running an ET of 8.44 @ 151.29. It was clear that these guys would be a serious threat during eliminations.

Shane Pendergrast took the number three spot with an ET of 8.48 @ 156.01. Shane’s bike has been flying recently but his high horsepower machine has also been hurting tires. Shane had major tire failure at Bowling Green and was forced to break in a new tire at the Rock.

Gary Douglass was looking good in the number four spot with and ET of 8.57 @ 156.10 mph. Gary won this race last year and would love to make it two in a row!

Larry Pesce was showing major improvements and laid down some nice passes on Saturday. Larry qualified in the number five spot with an ET of 8.62 @ 150.93 mph.

John Price was last year’s runner up and took the number six spot with an ET 8.73 @ 149.35 mph. John has been working hard on his Pro Mod machine could sneak up on anyone at this point.

Kyle Leblanc made some awesome runs during qualifying and took the number seven spot with and ET of 8.89 at 147.55 mph. Kyle’s bike is really starting to run.

Sunday made for a beautiful season finale for the members of the AMRA. Skies were blue and temperatures were in the low 80’s and this class of Pro Mod’s was fired up. Ryan Oehler has a solo shot in round one and went low ET of the first round at 8.353 @ 154.02 mph.

Gary Douglass faced off against Larry Pesce and when the green light dropped, Larry was early and went red. Gary defeated Larry with and ET of 8.60 to Larry’s 9.39.

Henry Stanton met up with Kyle Leblanc in round one and got very luck as Kyle turned on the red bulb. Kyle showed his best performance of season running in the 8.70’s during qualifying and is already planning some fall testing back home in Louisiana.

Shane Pendergrast lined up with John Price, both riders go green and we have a great drag race. Shane takes the win and will move into round two with an ET of 8.51 to John’s 8.93. John knows how demanding this Pro Mod class is and has plans for more horsepower this winter.

Pairing up in round two first was Gary Douglass and Ryan Oehler. Ryan was out first with a blazing reaction time of .004 and Gary was right there with a .009 light. Both bikes are ripping down the track and Ryan is first to the big end with an ET of 8.42 to Gary’s 9.36.

Next up was Shane Pendergrast and Henry Stanton. Henry drops the hammer a little quick and goes red, giving Shane a free pass to the finals.

Shane and Ryan have met in the finals 3 times this past year and this one would be another exciting race to watch. Both riders do their burnouts and roll to the line. These riders like to play games with each other at the lights and both wait for the other to light the stage bulbs. Shane rolls in first then Ryan right behind him. The green lights drop and Ryan is out first with a reaction time of .029 to Shane’s .071. Ryan lays down another blazing pass, with an ET of 8.356 @ 154.95 mph, to Shane’s 9.09 @ 114.56 mph. Shane’s bike spun the tire hard and just could not get hooked up. Ryan takes home his fifth win of the season and celebrates his back to back championships.

The Pro Mod machines of the AMRA are the fastest small tire gas Harley’s in the world. These bikes and riders battle it out at every race and put on a great show. The class continues to grow and has a bright future in 2017. Stay tuned for the AMRA’s 2017 schedule and make plans to come check these bad boys machines out next year.
