Lucas Oil, Arana Racing riders qualify in top half for U.S. Nationals

Lucas Oil Buell Pro Stock Motorcycle riders Hector Arana Sr. and Hector Arana Jr. will be threats to win the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals on Monday at Lucas Oil Raceway after qualifying in the top half of the field.

Hector Sr., racing a bike ridden by son Adam in 2013-14, qualified No. 6 with a pass of 6.903 seconds at 195.73 mph, and Hector Jr. is No. 7 with an identical elapsed time but at 194.13 mph.

“The U.S. Nationals is the granddaddy, the biggest event,” Hector Sr. said. “It means everything. We’ve been fortunate; I’ve won here and Hector Jr. has won here. But it will be even better if we can also not just do it once but keep doing it and come up with another win. It will make (Lucas Oil co-founder) Forrest (Lucas) proud.”

Hector Sr., the 2009 U.S. Nationals champion, faces Steve Johnson in the first round Monday after Johnson qualified No. 11 with a pass of 6.915 seconds at 193.02 mph.

Hector Jr., who won Indy in 2011, will race Jim Underdahl in the first round after Underdahl’s pass of 6.915 at 195.62 mph gave him the No. 10 qualifying spot.

“I’ll tell you what, it’s been a scorcher,” Hector Jr. said. “This heat definitely has been tricky. It’s been a while since we’ve been in heat like this, so we just have to keep taming this baby down. We’re making a lot of power, so we just have to slow it down. If we can do that we’ll be OK.”

“It would be cool to win again. This is the race. If you’re going to win only one race a year, this is the one you want to win. The prestige behind this race means so much. It’s the long weekend and everybody’s gunning for this race.

“We’ve got extra competitors that come out just to run this race. To qualify is an accomplishment in itself, especially since the class has become so strong and everybody runs so close together. To qualify is good. Now we just need to go some rounds. Most importantly, one round at a time.”
