Matheson, who only just returned to his Brisbane based workshop from Perth said “this year’s racing calendar is a busy one, especially competing in two National Australian Championships, running simultaneously across Australia”.
“The traditional ANDRA and the new Thunder 400 Championships across Australia geographically is challenging, particularly carrying enough spares to be able to compete at non home tracks, not to mention the distances between events.
Competing at our home track (Willowbank) is certainly an advantage, as we are only an hour to our race workshop. We have an inventory of spares and access to machining equipment, should we need it. Carrying tools, half a dozen rear tyres and multiple spares takes up a lot of room and it’s heavy. The time and cost to compete is a big challenge, let alone the racing at the actual event”.
We have little time to develop the race bike between race meetings, so we do what we can in the time we have.
Despite the challenges, the wins are even sweeter, that’s why it’s a National Championship, not a local competition. When you’re fortunate enough to win multiple Australian Championships, you really appreciate it because you have been consistently quick and have been able to perform at all the tracks on the National calendar, despite the huge distances and conditions that you’re presented with.
Matheson said he was eagerly waiting for the next double round at the Perth Motorplex in a couple of week’s time. Hopefully the Western Australian weather is kind to us, regardless, the Team is keen to step it up to try to run quicker.
Our PB at the Perth track is a 6.12, we want to better that and bag some Championship points in the process.
It is the last round on the West Coast in our calendar, we then return to our home turf on the Eastern side of Australia to compete in the final rounds of the Australian Championships.
