Season Opener Gremlins

The crew for this race consisted of Crewchief Sharon Hand, Steve Legendre, Dick Boxell, Ronnie Geeslin, Chuck Huneycutt make it Sunday for eliminations.

Chris puts in his usual long hours in the shop getting the RNE and the other million details ready before the trip. Steve arrives at the Redneck Compound Thursday to assist.

I arrive at the track Thursday night and then head to the motel to crash, and back to the track for Chris, Sharon and Steve’s’ arrival. Later Friday. We drop the trailer off and head to the motel.

Saturday morning we set up the Redneck Express pit area and to ensure the changes that were made to the fuel system we fire the bike several times, and miss the mid-day qualifier.

Saturday Qualifying Round 3 – Last ditch effort

Air check confirms typical great Valdosta weather, so Chris makes NITRO percentage and tune-up changes we fire the bike and sounds good!

The call goes out and we tow to the staging lanes.

Steve and Don Plesser go down track as Sharon runs the starter, we fire the bike and bring it through the water box, Chris hits the throttle to start the burnout, it boils up and a good burnout , Chris burns out to where they are waiting on him and the RNE.

Chris rolls up in the left lane and the lights flash on and Chris leaves decent but instantly drops a hole and about 1000 foot out the dreaded smoke screen appears from the rear of the bike. We get in on the 6.75 that the bike did run, putting us #6. The leak down is not good.

We pull out the damaged engine, (Merlin) while the engine is out Chris take the oil pump apart and cleans it and the oil filter is changed out also. We install our last bullet ( Robert E. Lee), and finish up around 2AM.

Race day Sunday -Round 1

We get the RNE ready for first round, fire it up and it sounds healthy! Unfortunately this is when we find we had a Gremlin in the driveline and failed to notice it when the bike was apart. The resulting disconnect between the clutch and transmission was only found shortly before first round and we were unable to correct it in time to make the round.

Congratulations to Sam (“I have been on fire three times this weekend”) Wills and the Nitro Conspiracy Team on the well-deserved win! They were thrashing all weekend.

We would like to thank the SGMP, crews, and staff , and the manufacturers that pulled together to put on this race.

We would like to recognize and thank our sponsors.
