ROCKINGHAM’S GRUDGEFEST VII IS ALL ABOUT THE RACING

No Purse, No Structure, No Problem for Growing Labor Day Tradition Call it the “Underground Indy.” Like the NHRA’s annual U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis, Rockingham Dragway’s Grudgefest has become an unlikely Labor Day tradition for some of the nation’s quickest and fastest motorcycle drag racers.

The outlaw two-wheel contingent that assembled at The Rock for the seventh time this Labor Day races for pride instead of purse and points. It’s for bragging rights as in “my bike is faster than yours” and the concept apparently isn’t as far-fetched as one might imagine.

“This was our seventh annual race,” said track owner Steve Earwood, “and we’re already making plans for the eighth next year. It’s kind of refreshing to host a race where racing is what matters and not all the politics that come into play when you’re running series events.

“We offer no purse, there are no traditional class runs or structured eliminations. Just good old street racing taken off the street,” Earwood continued. “We give these guys and gals a safe place to race and that’s all they’re looking for. They kind of make up all the rest and it works.”
